Dance Spree in Florida

A Warning to Students of Dance . . .

The goal of USA Dance is to promote ballroom dancing for amateurs of all ages, and we
want toshare our news, good and bad. Dancing has given us countless hours of
enjoyment. It provides us with physical, social and psychological benefits. Dancing is
like being a mountain climber or a scuba diver. The joy of dancing cannot be explained.
It must be experienced.

But there is also "bad news." In 2003, a  dance studio in Florida was in the news for "
fleecing little old ladies." Everyone knows this is not unique to any profession.
We read constantly about scams, and our officials try hard to warn the public,
especially the elderly.

A warning to the public: Dancing need not be expensive. If you exercise due diligence,
you too, can join the many happy, satisfied dancers in our chapter. Adherence to the
following recommendations may prevent you from becoming a victim:
  • Get references -- ask a friend or relative about their personal experience. Beware of
  • hearsay or just one opinion.

  • Do comparison shopping. Check out several dance studios and get prices.

  • Call your local Chamber of Commerce and/or Florida State licensing department to ask
  • if complaints have been filed against any studio or instructor you are considering.

As chapter members and students of dance, we wish to defend our legitimate

local dance studios and teachers. Most of them are hardworking, honest and

dedicated to their students. But we also recommend that you exercise sensible

caution prior to signing any contract. And remember, many studios do not

require contracts!
